Out of these at least 10 categories are reserved for patients with serious diseases. However, like many other rules of Indian Railways, there is lack of awareness among the masses which often leads to non-usage of such privileges. So, let us take a look at various railway fare concessions for patients.

Essentials of Booking Tickets with Discounts for Patients

  • All the general rules of Indian Railways are applicable for such concession schemes. Check the rules here
  • Such concessions are available only for over-the-counter ticket bookings. Concessions cannot be procured for online ticket booking.
  • Concessions can be availed both for Outward and Return journeys.
  • The concession would be provided after the ticket booking authority verifies the duly filled form, by Hospital authorities. Download the form here

Concession for Cancer Patients

Recent statistics suggest that more than 1.8 million people in India are suffering from cancer. The concession for cancer patients varies from 50-100%, depending on the class chosen for the journey. The concession is applicable when the patient is traveling for treatment or periodic check-up.

  • Concession Details: 100% (in Sleeper & 3-tier AC), 75% (in 1st Class, 2nd Class & AC Chair Car), 50% (in 1st Class AC & 2 tier AC)
  • Escort Concession: One person accompanying the patient on the trip would also receive the same percentage of concession except for Sleeper & 3-tier AC classes (where the escort gets 75% concession).

Concession for Heart Patients

More than 30 million Indians are suffering from some type of heart condition or the other. If you are planning for a heart surgery at an out-of-station healthcare facility, you can avail 50-75% concession specially earmarked for heart patients.

Though the rate of new HIV infections in India have gone down drastically, largely due to many successful campaigns, yet nearly 3 million patients remain infected with HIV. HIV patients who are making a journey for further treatment or check-up at a Government nominated ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) centers can avail a discount of 50% for themselves and their escort.

The next time you are traveling by train to an out-of-station health care facility, for Dialysis or kidney transplant surgery, use the patient’s’ concession. Under this concession scheme you and your escort for the journey can avail a concession ranging between 50-75%.

  • Concession Details: 75% (in 1st Class, 2nd Class, Sleeper, 3 Tier AC, AC Chair Car), 50% (in 1st Class AC and 2 tier AC)

  1. All such patient must be given facilities for online booking instead of purchase from counter which involve lots of fatigue for the patient. Now since all passengers have to link to adhaar , u can once check the details & results can be linked once for a period depending upon illness

  2. What is the use of such concessions if the patient cannot avail online ? In my view the purpose of relief to patients is defeated.

  3. I can believe that there is a lack of awareness that is causing non-usage of privileges like this one. I wasn’t aware that there were special concessions for patients until I started doing some research. I got interested in learning more after stumbling across a travel blog that talked about a topic similar to this.

  4. my 3yrs son is disabled infent . He has concession certificate also. We have to book tickets for him and Escort to CMC for treatment. But as till he is minor 3yrs he has no need of ticket. how can I get concession for the Escort. Kindly let me know. I will wait from your end.

  5. Can a brain surgery patient travel by train is their any kind of special treat for him my father had a surgery past 6 month ago need to travel from Delhi to Kolkata kindly suggest me the procedure if any

    • Hi Aman the list has all its details you can check there. If you find concession for epileptic patients in the list you will get otherwise there is no such norms for epileptic patients.Thanks

My child 9 years suffering from Wilson disease (a very rare life threatening disease, which requires liver transplantation of 25 lakhs to 35 Lakhs expense, and is done) seeks railway concession to travel from Dhanbad to Delhi, but very shocked to know that liver transplant is not covered under railway concession.

    Kindly add Liver Transplant, as after transplant the patient (recipient) is asked to follow up every 15 days for one year, and they need sterile environment while travelling.

  7. I m a cancer patient. For treatment I need to travel from Bangalore to DELHI.
    There are so many station in Delhi like new Delhi, hz. Nizamuddin, s. Rohilla etc. Same as in Bangalore like Bengaluru city, yeshwantpur jn.
    So if on my concession certificate mention from new Delhi station to Bengaluru city.
    Can I get concession ticket from hz. Nizamuddin to yeshwantpur jn also.
    Pls help me in this regard.

  10. My mother is a Cancer patient and she has to travel from SASARAM-to new Delhi for treatment but tickets are not available on journey date.does railway gives any concession for Cancer patient if any concession is available give full details and full process for concession.
