How to reach?

By train: Srisailam doesn’t have a railway station of its own, nearest railway station to Srisailam is at Markapur (50 KM away) but the popular one is Hyderabad railway station.

Mallikarjuna Temple or Sri Brahmaramba temple

Mallikarjuna Temple

When someone refers to Srisailam temple, it is the Mallikarjuna temple that they are referring to. This is the most famous landmark of Srisailam and it visited by thousands of devout Hindu pilgrims each year. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is among the 12 Jyotirlingaas of Lord Shiva and one of the 12 Shakti Peethas of Goddess Parvati! It is believed that Goddess Parvati took the form of a bee (‘Brahmaramba’ means ‘the mother of bees’) to worship Lord Shiva in the form of Mallikarjuna here at this temple and hence the name.

Pathala Ganga

At an approximate distance of 1 KM from Mallikarjuna temple, lies the Pathala Ganga. It is a sacred place and situated on the backwaters of River Krishna, behind the Srisailam Dam. Pathala Ganga is known for its scenic backdrop. It offers a views of wide reservoir and the majestic mountains spread with the lush green Nallamala forest. While the devotees to Srisailam temple prefer to take a holy dip in the Krishna River here, it is also known for its various activities.

Pathala Ganga is the boating center of the town and many also set out from here towards the Akkamahadevi caves. There are two magnificent ways to reach Pathala Ganga. Firstly, you can trek down 500 steps from Hanuman temple while enjoying the beauty of the hills, and secondly you can hitch a ride on the ropeway operated from Hanuman temple. Taking the ropeway is an astonishing experience with the breathtaking sight of nature.

Located 18 KM away from Srisailam, a visit to the Akkamahadevi caves are a perfect blend of thrill and religious belief. These caves are located within dense forests and hence, tourists can reach Akkamahadevi by taking a boat ride from Pathala Ganga (which takes about an hour) and then trek forward for a few minutes. Visitors have to be careful while walking inside the 150 metres deep caves as these are devoid of any light. The height and width of the cave also decreases as one goes further inside. At the end of this narrow tunnel is the naturally formed Shivalingam, which is held to be very auspicious.

  • Tip: Boat services from Pathala Ganga starts from 10:30 AM and need to be booked in advance.
