Mhow (officially known as Dr Ambedkar Nagar), a small town that is 23 KM away from Indore city, is still an unknown entity among the tourists. Elegant and tall British era buildings still decorate this town. The main market would bring out the shopaholic in you, as there is just so much to see and buy here. Tourist attractions of Mhow
Janapav Kuti
Janapav Kuti is one of the most scenic attractions of Mhow. This mountain is considered to be the second highest point of the Malwa region. The mountain is surrounded by lush forests and offers great views all around. Janapav Kuti also has significant mythological value, as it is held to be the birthplace of Parashurama (Vishnu’s avatar). It is also believed that river Chambal begins its journey near the hills of Janapav. A temple and ashram is situated atop the hill. People believe that the ashram belonged to Jamadagni, father of Parashurama. Every year on the eve of Kartik Purnima a mela is held here, where hundreds of people visit the hill to pay their obeisance and prayers.
Choral Dam
This is one of the most picturesque water bodies near Indore. The dam which was built to supply water for irrigation and drinking purposes has quickly turned into a favorite picnic spot for the locals. This place turns into a heaven with abundance of water and lush green environs during the monsoons (especially between the months of July to September). Nearby the dam, there are many hillocks which contrast ideally with the water. A bungalow by the Irrigation Department has become a key vantage point for the tourists. It offers breathtaking views of the waters and the surroundings.
Tip: It is best to visit the Dam in the early morning or evening hours, as sunrise and sunset views from the viewpoint is marvellous.
Patalpani Waterfall
If you are planning a trip to Mhow between the months of July to September, then this waterfall should definitely find a place in your tour itinerary. The Patalpani waterfall is known for its unspoilt beauty, at large during the monsoon season. The water falling from a height of 300 feet, creates a marvellous sight. Apart from this, the area near the waterfall is lush green and many rare birds can be viewed on the shores. Many adventurous minded tourists even trek up the hill to reach the source of this waterfall.
- Beware: The area around the waterfall is prone to flash floods. So, you should leave the water as soon as you are warned by the authorities.
- Trivia: Do not visit this place during the summer months, the water dries out and the waterfall largely loses its beauty.
Mandu
Just a short drive away from Mhow lies the historic town of Mandu. The town is well known for its historical monuments upholding the beauty of Afghan architecture. In the recent times, Mandu has become a popular tourist attraction of Madhya Pradesh and tourists from far and wide are paying a visit to this city. From Roopmati’s Pavilion, Baz Bahadur’s Palace to Shri Mandavagadh Teerth, Jami Masjid there is so much to see around in Mandu.
- Trivia: Baobab trees, which are native to Africa, can be seen in this city. The fruits of the Baobab trees are known as Mandu ki Imli here.

Shopping in Mhow
Due to its proximity to Maheshwar (the heartland of Maheshwari and Chandheri sarees), Mhow is a great place to buy some printed sarees such as Kalamkari, Daabu, Ikat on cotton and silk. The shopkeepers here, take great pride in their trait and have been in the specialized business for many generations. Shadow work is also a specialized product in these parts and it is done on cotton, Georgette and chiffon sarees.
