Insights into simplifying train travel

The Saga of Indian Train Toilets

Just think, how hard it would be to make a long train journey if there were no toilets! The sheer thought is quite horrifying, isn’t it? The train toilets have great importance in making your journeys happy and worry free. While there has been many improvements in other areas of train bogeys, but theirs toilets have remained at their basic best. So, today we take a closer look at train toilets.

History of Train Toilets

Train passengers had to wait for 55 years to get the facility of toilets in trains. Imagine the challenges of long journeys during those times! But all this changed, courtesy a hilarious letter written by a passenger, Okhil Chandra Sen. Okhil wrote the below given letter to the Sahibganj divisional railway office in 1909:

“I am arrive by passenger train to Ahmedpur station and my belly is too much swelling with jackfruit. I am therefore went to privy. Just I doing the nuisance that guard making whistle blow for train to go off and I am running with ‘lotah’ in one hand and ‘dhoti’ in the next when I am fall over and expose all my shocking to man and female women on platform. I am got leaved at Ahmedpur station.

This too much bad, if passenger go to make dung that dam guard not wait train five minutes for him. I am therefore pray your honour to make big fine on that guard for public sake. Otherwise I am making big report! to papers.”

This hilarious, yet impactful, description of Okhil Chandra Sen got the attention of Railways authorities and soon toilets were implemented in trains. As a mark of reverence, this letter is kept for display at the Railway Museum in New Delhi.

Indian train toilets

Unhygienic toilets, has and will remain to be one of the biggest aching points for passengers. So, it is time for you to take matters into your own hands. At RailYatri’s Travel Store, you will find products that help you stay hygienic when using the toilets in trains.

Stay away from skin infections, gut problems and STDs: While the recent cleanliness drive in most trains makes sure that the toilets are periodically cleaned (though the time gaps are woefully long!), the toilet seats are hardly disinfected. But did you know, toilet seats contain 50 bacteria per square inch and when you use them you are susceptible to various severe diseases. This is why we have toilet seat covers that shield your skin from the germs.

Great initiative, this will really help the passenger untill the Indian Railways come out with bio toilets. Once the Bio toilets are available in the trains it should be the responsibility of the Railways and passenger to keep this toilets clean and hygienic.
We the People of India still lag very much behind when it comes to hygiene. A lot needs to be done to inculcate the habit of cleanliness.
